How much does it cost to maintain a hot tub in the UK?

The cost of maintaining your hot tub here in the UK is completely dependent on the type of hot tub you purchase since all hot tubs can vary in dimensions, materials, and functionality.

Your hot tub selection process should factor in many things including your desired functionality (i.e., water capacity, pump power, wattage, heater power) and features (i.e., seats, jets, lighting, entertainment) as well as quality engineering.

How much does it cost to maintain a hot tub in the UK?

While higher-end hot tubs are initially more expensive at initial purchase, these models may be less expensive for ongoing maintenance and care down the road. As an example, things like high-quality insulation and a dedicated circulation pump will go the distance for you, saving you money with the increased energy efficiency.

The best way to get a much better understanding of the ongoing cost of maintenance and the requirement for your hot tub is to visit a reputable hot tub retailer and speak to them directly regarding any questions you may have. The hot tub retailer will be able to help you with all your questions, options, and price points. You may be surprised to learn how much a different choice can positively impact the overall maintenance costs for the life of the hot tub for example a standard insulated hot tub could cost you around £51.10 per month, whilst a super insulated hot tub has been independently proven to cost around £14.10 per month.

What is the average hot tub installation cost?

Most hot tub retailers here in the UK will provide free standard delivery and installation of your hot tub, however for more complex installation where there is a need for either a crane or hiab to lift the hot tub over a building to its final position the company may charge your anything between £600 - £900 for this service.

What is the average monthly energy bill of running a hot tub?

Would you be surprised to learn that the best engineered, most highly insulated hot tub can cost between £15 to £38 per month to run and a poorly insulated hot tub can cost you upwards of £80 plus per month, however it is the finer details that will determine this final monthly bill!

  • Larger hot tubs cost more to heat than smaller hot tubs.

  • The more you use your hot tub, the more you will need to use your heater.

  • Hot tubs are more expensive to heat in the winter than in the summer.

The key to lowering the cost of running your hot tub is about increasing its ability to hold heat. By keeping the heat in, you reduce the amount of energy necessary to maintain the temperature. This can help keep your energy bill more manageable, all year round.

Is a good quality hot tub cover worth the money?

A hot tub cover is an important accessory that has many functions. In addition to saving you money, keeping children safe and debris out they also reduce the amount of time it takes to maintain your hot tub. They do need some care and attention to keep them in good condition but ultimately, it's worth the time and effort.

We all want to save money and if you are like most hot tub owner's you probably try your best to conserve energy costs the best you can. A cover that is sized properly, has the proper foam density for insulation and is used all the time will reduce your operating costs substantially.

Any time that your cover is not being used you are losing water due to evaporation, heat from radiant loss and with that comes the loss of chemicals.

What is the average hot tub water care costs?

For a hot tub that remains on all year round, we estimate yearly chemical costs of £200-£350 a year. Hot tub chemical costs vary massively depending on the sanitiser you choose (chlorine or bromine) the use of water conditioners like O-Care or Silk Balance and general usage. It is most cost effective to buy larger quantities or buy in bulk if you can.

In order to keep your hot tub in perfect condition throughout the year, you will need to maintain your tub properly. You will need to regularly balance your water, clean, and replace filters, clean, drain and refill your hot tub, and make sure it stays protected in harsh winter months. This routine maintenance will require some basic products and supplies which we have listed below which you can buy online from our website Penguin Spas

How Much Does it Cost To Fill a Hot Tub on a Water Meter?

Based on information from Southern Water at the rate of £1.487 per cubic metre of water (1,000 litres) plus the wastewater charge of £2.045, it will cost around £5.30 to fill a 1,500-litre hot tub and if you are changing your water every quarter which we recommend, your annual water costs would be £21.19. This does not include the annual standing charge and charges will vary depending on your local water board. See the Southern Water Charges explained here.

Please note that in Scotland the vast majority of households are billed by their local authority for their water supply and wastewater collection services together with their Council Tax. These charges are referred to as unmeasured charges and are based on the Council Tax banding of the house.
