How much does it cost to run a swim spa in the UK? Updated Feb 2022.

The cost of running a swim spa does vary wildly across the UK as there are regional differences in domestic water rates and energy prices but also you need to take into consideration the size of the swim spa and the type of insulation it has to offer in heat retention.

However, that’s not the end of it. A lot more factors can affect the cost of running a swim spa that you should know about. Without further ado, let’s dive into this topic, shall we?

What is the average Swim Spa Running Costs?

Though a final cost to run a swim spa is difficult to estimate due to several key factors (make, model, insulation, water rates, energy tariff, servicing, and supplies), we have estimated the average swim spa running costs to be between £96.30 to £383.02 per month which is based on three models of swim spas available here in the UK and operated for one hour daily.

What are the Monthly Breakdown Costs of Running a Swim Spa here in the UK?

Buying a new swim spa is only a part of the expense. Running it has plenty of other costs involved. As a buyer new buyer, you should consider all these monthly costs before committing to buy a swim spa.

  • Electricity Consumption: £39.46 to £230.02

  • Water Supply: £0.00 to £4.11

  • Pool Chemicals: £27.01 to £83.48

  • Replacement Filters: £5.25 to £7.51

What are the electricity costs of running a swim spa?

When it comes to running a swim spa daily, the electricity that drives the pumps and water heaters will be much of your expenditure. The price of electricity will determine how much this will cost you in the long run.

In January 2022, Ofgem announced a price cap on electricity prices at £0.28 kWh which will take effect on the 1st of April and with this in mind our team here at Penguin Spas and SPATECUK have based our electricity usage calculations on the 1st of April 2022 Ofgem price cap of £0.28 kWh to ensure the acracy of this report / blog.

Of course, the cost of electricity in your area will be the leading indicator of what your actual electric bill will work out to. Beyond your local rates for electricity, there are several other variables which will affect your operating costs.

Swim Spa Size

The size of your swim spa will play a role in the size of your electricity bills. It only stands to reason that a larger swim spa will cost more to operate than a smaller one. But buying a small swim spa to save money on your electricity bills may be looking at the situation from the wrong angle. You’re going to want to buy a model that works best for the number of people you expect to be using it and how they plan to use it. If you fixate on operating costs to the detriment of comfort, you may end up with a large purchase that doesn’t achieve its full potential.

Amount of Use

The amount of use that your swim spa gets will also determine how much it costs to run. The bills of a family that uses their swim spa on a daily basis will naturally be higher than that of a family that practices their stroke once or twice a week.

Type of Use

Some people like to use their swim spa simply as a place to cool off. Others take their swimming practice very seriously. Whereas others prefer to turn up the water temperature and soak away their aches and pains. The type of use your swim spa gets will affect your electricity bills accordingly.

Climate

Those who live in relatively warm climates will not have to pay as much to keep their water heated compared with those who have harsh winters. And unlike swimming pools, it’s possible to keep your swim spa running all year round regardless of how cold your winters get. But you’ll definitely pay for the pleasure.

Insulation

The amount of insulation that surrounds the cabinet of your swim spa will play a significant role in how much it costs to keep your water at a constant temperature. Inground models benefit from the insulating properties of the ground that surrounds it. For above-ground models, the type and amount of insulation you choose should be dependent on the climate in your area. The colder the climate the more cost-effective extra insulation will be.

Water Temperature

To keep your electricity costs to a minimum it’s best to keep your water temperature constant. This means leaving the water heater running when the system isn’t in use. It may seem like this will cause your electric bills to skyrocket, but it will actually take much more electricity to bring your water up to temperature every time you want to use your swim spa. Set your preferred temperature and leave it there.
