With many retailers across the world claiming to be carbon neutral by offsetting their carbon emission through purchasing carbon credits and planting trees, Penguin Spas took the radical decision to be the worlds first net zero carbon neutral hot tub and swim spa retailer by investing over £80,000 in clean green technology for its new 1,283m2 Premium Outdoor Living showroom in South Lanarkshire, Scotland by offsetting the energy used through renewable sources.
Biomass Wood Pellets
The company wanted to consider all options of renewable energy for heating the new retail showroom, office, hot tubs, swim spa and other buildings so after a thorough survey decided to switch to biomass heating to reduce carbon emissions and operating costs.
The new 30Kw HERZ pelletstar boiler with 1,300 litre buffer tank and a 4.8 tonne pellet store was carefully installed in a detached barn which supplies hot water to heat the showroom, office, hot tubs, and swim spa. The biomass boiler runs on wood pellets from sustainably managed forests and sawmill co-products which have been produced locally by Land Energy production plant in Girvan, Scotland.
Solar Energy
By introducing 10kw of solar cells along with the latest TESLA Powerwall (battery that stores energy), Penguin Spas has successfully eliminated the need on consumption of electricity from electricity suppliers as they currently generate more energy than is required which is then automatically fed back to the national grid.
In the last 6 months, Penguin Spas Premium Outdoor Living has launched a range of award-winning energy efficient hot tubs from Sunbeach Spas and Oasis Spas to the Scottish market along with sustainably sourced wood burning hot tubs which are 100% fully recyclable.
“With Glasgow hosting the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) on 31 October – 12 November, this is a crucial year in the fight against climate change and we recognise our responsibility to reduce our emissions to help tackle this important issue,” said Michelle McKay, MD at Penguin Spas Premium Outdoor Living.
According to the BRC (British Retail Consortium) Climate Action Roadmap, the UK retail industry contributes approximately 215 MtCO2e through the lifecycle footprint of goods sold annually in the UK, with additional emissions from vehicle fuel sales by retailers of ~50 MtCO2e. This places the sector among the most important contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, contributing approximately 80% more emissions each year than all road transport in the UK.
“Tackling climate change needs to be at the top of everyone’s agenda. That’s why a major part of our 10th anniversary in 2022 is focused on continuing to tackle the challenges the wet leisure industry and retail faces regarding environmental impact. To do this, over the next 12 months we’re launching a number of further ambitious sustainability goals and initiatives by doubling our outdoor living showroom space with it all being off grid,” said Kieth McKay, Operations and Legal Director at Penguin Spas Premium Outdoor Living.
