With the rise of energy prices, asking "how energy efficient are your hot tubs", is one of the most important questions to ask a hot tub retailer when purchasing a new hot tub for the first time. However, many hot tub retailers and hot tub manufacturers are starting to make spurious claims about the energy efficiency of their hot tubs, and there are very few that can provide independently tested results to back there somewhat wild and misleading claims... So, you will be glad to know that we can independently verify the energy efficiency on our range of multiple award-winning hot tubs, but more importantly we have published the independent TÜV SÜD test results below which demonstrates the energy consumptions based on the latest Ofgem Energy Price Cap (October 2023).

How did you independently test the energy efficiency of your SmartSpa™ R10 hot tubs?


The manufacturer of Sunbeach Spas established the only hot tub factory with witness laboratory of TÜV SÜD Certification in the world. Through several tests in the laboratory of SmartSpa™ R10 insulated hot tubs alongside a direct comparison of a normal insulated hot tubs, the TÜV SÜD experts where able to conduct testing, measurements and certification in-line with the applicable norms and standards to independently certify the energy efficiency of SmartSpa™ R10 insulated hot tubs - See the results below.

UK hot tub designer Sunbeach Spas and Oasis Spas introduced the registered trademarks of SmartSpa™ R10, SmartSpa™ R10 Plus and SmartSpa™ R18 Plus to their collection of hot tubs and swim spas earlier last year with the aim of combating the growing number of hot tub retailers across the UK advertising hot tubs with R10 and R18 energy efficiency without any independent certification nor any understanding of what exactly R values are.

The New SmartSpa™ R10, SmartSpa™ R10 Plus and the SmartSpa™ R18 Plus logos gives consumers the confidence of purchasing an energy efficient hot tub that has been independently tested and verified of its credentials.


What does a R10 hot tub or R18 hot tub mean?

The R value refers to a materials ability to resist heat flowing through it at a certain thickness. The higher the R-Value, the better it can resist heat transfer. The R Value on our hot tubs are based on the thermal resistance of the hot tub elements which includes the closed cell foam sprayed on the shell, side skirts and base, where contradictory to the U value the higher the R value the better performing the product is, in the sense of reducing heat loss (the higher the R value the better the product is at insulating).




What difference does a hot tub with SmartSpa™ R10 insulation make?

A hot tub with SmartSpa™ R10 insulation will save you on average £124.91 per month or £1,498.90 per year on energy costs. To show the difference between a SmartSpa™ R10 insulated hot tub and a normal heat insulated hot tub, the TÜV SÜD independently tested both hot tubs electricity consumption under specified use conditions and the findings recalculated to reflect the current Ofgem Energy Price Cap @ 27.35 pence per kWh and 53.37 pence per day for the daily standing charge. This is based on the average across England, Scotland and Wales and includes VAT - Standard variable tariff (default tariff) and pay for your electricity by Direct Debit

How we tested the Sunbeach SB355L 5-Person Hot Tub

We tested the Sunbeach SB355L under these Conditions:

  • Removed upper cover for 30 minutes, and used the hot tub for 15 minutes during that time.

  • Twice water circulations every day with each water circulation lasting 3 hours and all the motor operating for 1 minute before each water circulation.

  • The rest of the time it was kept warm with the covers on.

  • 2 Usages per day.

  • Twice water circulations every day with each water circulation lasting 3 hours and all the motor operating for 1 minute each day.

  • The rest of the time it was kept warm with the covers on.
